Nursing a flame that was lit 40 years ago, it appears black rifle maker Windham Weaponry still has some life left in it.

Maine’s largest and best-known rifle maker, Windham was founded in 2011 by Richard Dyke from the remnants of the old Bushmaster factory left behind in the Pine Tree State when Remington Outdoors pulled stumps and relocated the Windham-based Bushmaster line out of state. Dyke had founded Bushmaster in 1973.

However, following the passing of Dyke in March at age 88, and citing failure “to meet our loan obligations with the bank after they worked with us as much as they could,” Windham announced in September that they would close its doors and liquidate its operations.

But it would seem, to turn a phrase, that the reports of Windam’s demise have been greatly exaggerated and the new WW announced a comeback last week.

“We are back!”! Windham Weaponry Inc. is pleased to announce our return to the firearms industry,” reads a notice by the company issued on social media. “We are under new ownership and a new management team. We have also hired back some of the best gun people in the industry with many having 20-30 years of experience.”

Moving forward, the rebooted company has a new website, currently just listing parts and components but no full-up rifles. As for legacy customers and Windam owners, “We will be upholding the 100 percent limited lifetime warranty on all firearms manufactured by Windham Weaponry Inc. past or present,” says the company. “Our customers are important to us.”

According to the latest information from federal regulators, in 2021, Windham Weaponry produced 1,264 pistols as well as 20,221 rifles, and 1,445 “miscellaneous firearms,” the latter a category typically used by the ATF to categorize the production of standalone lower receivers. Most were for the American commercial market, although at least 541 rifles were exported overseas in 2021. Maine had 21 other Type 7 FFLs – firearm manufacturers – on record that year, but none produced more than 100 guns.
